World Physical Therapy Day

World Physical Therapy Day DataDiary

What’s Its About?

The human body is remarkably easy to damage and break, and no more so than when participating in strenuous physical activity such as sporting or athletic activity.

Physical therapists work to undo damage, educate on healthy behaviour and to restore lost or damaged functionality. Physical Therapy Day, then, is dedicated to these professionals throughout the world, and aims to recognise their commitment to keeping us all fighting-fit.

Physical therapists often work out of physical rehab centers – not to be confused with drug rehabs.

World Physical Therapy Day is on September 8th 2012.

It is a unique opportunity for physical therapists and physiotherapists from all over the world to raise awareness about the crucial contribution the profession makes to keeping people well, mobile and independent.  For examples of events that have taken place in previous years please see reports in WCPT News.

This year, more than ever, with the burden of non communicable diseases (NCDs) resulting in 36 million world wide deaths, and even more pain and suffering with disability, immobility and loss of independence it is crucial for more physical therapists, globally, to include the World Health Organisation’s advice on exercise and physical activity as part of routine clinical care.

Ann Gates, Founder of Exercise Works! said in a subsequent British Journal of Sports Medicine blog:

‘It is unacceptable in 21st century medicine for 36 million people to die from preventable and treatable diseases!’

Regular exercise advice and support is life changing medicine for patients! Let’s celebrate the unique skills of the physical therapist and their contribution to medicine and patients by ensuring that indeed:

‘Families, communities, nations and the world are: ‘Fit for life!’
